What the Election 2016 Means to Me

L-R: Roxas, Duterte, Santiago, Poe, & Binay,
the 2016 Presidential Election
Candidates
On May 9, 2016, I had the chance for the very first time to participate and vote in the Local and National Elections 2016. I had to vote far away from home because I am registered in the modest little town of Mabini, Pangasinan. Apparently, an uncle of mine is running for mayor in that town, and he needs all the support that he can get from his relatives to vote for him. I am happy to say that he was able to win a very close fight against his opponent. I am not at all unsure with my vote for my uncle because I am pretty certain of his character both as a leader of the community and as a father to his children. However, I was quite unsure with my vote for the governor, vice-governor, and all the other candidates for the positions needed for Pangasinan. It is with a heavy heart that I have to vote for people that I do not know. I just had to trust the instinct and advice of my relatives, hoping that the people whom I will be voting for the province of Pangasinan will veritably make this province a place to reckon with in the whole country. More so,  what really bothered me is who I will be voting for the top most position which is the presidency.

For the presidency, I was unsettled with Grace Poe and Miriam Defensor-Santiago. Both of them, based from my observation are very wise and intelligent people. Moreover, I am looking for a candidate who will do his/her best to solve the dismal state of education in the Philippines, for after all, I am a teacher. The two candidates seem to me the best option for that aspect that I am considering. Also, I am after a candidate who can do something with the very poor state of public transportation because I commute day in and day out, and tell you, it's not really a relaxing trip most of the time. Reckoning about this aspect, both of them seem to have the right solutions for the problems. I had to go through the websites of both candidates in order for me to learn more about them and still I was unsure. It was only after watching a YouTube video of Defensor-Santiago wherein she was interviewed by Karen Davila in which I became fully certain of my decision.

After watching this video, I began to realize that she is indeed a very principled person and she is very willing to fight for these principles right until the very end, thus her famous quote : I EAT DEATH THREATS FOR BREAKFAST.

And that word PRINCIPLE struck a very vital chord in me. I really needed a president who is principled enough and will not get swayed with the thinking of the majority which can be wrong. I needed a president who is brave and courageous enough to fight off leaders who cannot function according to the right principles of being a leader. She is my president no matter what, although her health has become a very popular issue, I chose not to look at it that way. Even if she died right after 1 year of being elected, at least this country had the best leader that it could ever had.

On May 9, I received with my bare hands my ballot, and I was so proud that I voted for her. I had no regrets at all. I consider this as my way of honoring the rightful president of this country.

Now that the elections are over and Duterte is leading the polls, I am not feeling sorry that I am voting for Defensor- Santiago. I just wish and pray right now that Duterte who is soon to be poised as the President of this country be the best leader that he can be. He is strong and brave just like my candidate, so I believe still that he can bring peace and order to this country and make it a happy nation again.

To conclude, this election meant a lot to me. What they are saying is true, it's not about the candidates. It is about us ordinary Filipino citizens. We vote according to our conscience and according to what we believe in. I think that at this time, we shouldn't be divided, instead, we should be united for our next leader because change is definitely imminent.
